Now that the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine is over; I have watched the potential draftees, listened to the commentary about each one, and looked over some footage of some of the most promising prospects, this is what I would do if I was the one picking for the Eagles in the Draft.
In the first round (pick 19) I would try for: Limas Sweed, WR, Texas The Eagles need an elite threat at receiver and I think Limas Sweed can be their No. 1 guy. I think McNabb will love Sweed because he is a very reliable receiver and he is great in the red zone. However the NFL is a copycat league. The Giants were able to stun the 18-0 Patriots in the Super Bowl because they were able to put immense pressure on Tom Brady. Andy Reid and Jim Johnson undoubtedly saw this, and may want to mimic their divisional rival. They're also well aware that besides Trent Cole, no Eagle had more than five sacks in 2007, and that their defense managed just three sacks on Eli Manning in the two meetings against New York. With Jevon Kearse and Darren Howard bound to get released, there's a good chance Philadelphia may acquire another defensive end to join Cole, Juqua Thomas and Victor Abiamiri in what should be a stout rotation. Osi Umenyiora dominated the Eagles early in the season for six sacks, and I find it just a bit convenient that Derrick Harvey essentially has the same build. I also considered DeSean Jackson, Malcolm Kelly, and Aqib Talib. I don't think Kelly will still be available this late in the first round. The Eagles need receivers and a return specialist, and Jackson would help them in both areas, but I think he could still be available later. Aqib Talib is also an option; if Philadelphia takes him, it could move Sheldon Brown to free safety.
In the second round (pick 49) I would try for: DeSean Jackson, WR, California know that it is very unlikely given his previous record for Andy Reid to take two WR in his first two draft picks, but it is what I would do. The Eagles need receivers and a return specialist, and Jackson would help them in both areas. He isn't what I would look for in a no. 1 receiver, but he should make a great no. 2, and he is a great returner. Another choice might be Terrell Thomas, the Eagles need a cornerback so they can move Sheldon Brown to free safety. They also must acquire a return specialist. Terrell Thomas can fill both of those needs. also any of the ones I have already mentioned who are still available would work here as well.Once you get this far into the Draft its hard to say who would still be available, especially since Free agency hasn't even officially started yet and they are expecting a lot of trades this year, at this point its hard to say what the order will look like by the time the draft actually starts. As it gets closer maybe I will have a better idea about the third round.
